
When a storm knocks out power, your private well stops being an appliance you rarely think about. It becomes part of the recovery checklist. Even after electricity returns, you should not assume that the pump, pressure tank, wiring, and water supply are ready for normal use.
The need for a careful restart was highlighted on September 8, 2026, when damaging winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Lowell knocked out power to thousands on Kauai. The Associated Press, reporting through The Guardian, also noted continuing risks from flooding and mudslides in its report on Hurricane Lowell's effects in Hawaii.
You do not need hurricane conditions for a well problem to develop. A severe thunderstorm, flash flood, fallen tree, or extended outage can create similar concerns. The right response depends on whether your property experienced only a loss of electricity or possible physical damage and floodwater intrusion.
Start with the area around the well
Before restoring or resetting anything, look at the wellhead and the surrounding ground from a safe distance. Check for standing water, erosion, displaced soil, fallen limbs, damaged conduit, or a well cap that appears loose or broken. Do not touch wet electrical equipment or enter standing water near wiring.
If floodwater reached the wellhead, treat that as possible contamination, not merely a cleanup issue. Surface water can carry sediment, microbes, fuel, and other material into a damaged or poorly sealed well. Avoid using the water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, or washing produce until you have followed guidance from your local health department or environmental agency.
A well that remained dry and physically intact presents a different situation. An outage by itself does not automatically contaminate groundwater. It can, however, reveal pump, control, or pressure problems when power returns.
Make the electrical restart uneventful
Check your electrical panel for a tripped well pump breaker, but do not repeatedly reset it. A breaker that trips again may be signaling damaged wiring, a failed pump, a short, or another electrical fault. Repeated attempts can make the problem worse.
Call a qualified electrician or well professional if you see damaged wiring, smell burning material, hear unusual pump sounds, or find water inside electrical components. If you use a portable generator, follow the manufacturer's instructions and never connect it to household wiring without an appropriate transfer setup.
Once the pump operates, pay attention to how the system behaves. Faucets may sputter briefly if air entered the plumbing. Persistent air, muddy water, rapidly changing pressure, or a pump that cycles on and off every few seconds deserves professional attention. Turn the system off if continued operation could damage equipment.
Do not test too early
If the well may have flooded, testing water immediately can be less useful than it sounds. The well may first need inspection, pumping, and disinfection according to local instructions. Testing before those steps can confirm an obvious problem without telling you whether the corrective work succeeded.
For a post-flood test, ask a certified drinking water laboratory or your local health department which analyses are appropriate. Coliform bacteria and E. coli are common starting points after suspected surface water entry. Depending on local conditions and visible damage, officials may recommend additional tests. A broad retail test strip is not a substitute for laboratory analysis when floodwater may have entered a well.
Sample timing matters. Follow the laboratory's directions about disinfectant flushing, faucet selection, container handling, and delivery time. Do not rinse a sterile sample bottle or touch the inside of its cap. Those small mistakes can undermine the result.
Create a record before the next storm
Photograph the wellhead, pressure tank, control box, and normal pressure gauge reading when the system is working properly. Save the pump model, well contractor's number, laboratory contact information, and previous test results in one place. Mark the well's location so it can still be found if debris or vegetation covers the area.
The practical rule is simple: separate power restoration from water clearance. Electricity coming back tells you that the pump may be able to run. It does not tell you that storm water stayed out, damaged equipment is safe, or the water has passed an appropriate test. A measured restart protects both your well system and the water you bring into your home.
